I can't offer any explanation as to the perceived density of the bean vs.
your expectation of first crack. 
My experiences are that you cannot rush a good dry-processed bean from
Brazil and generally the fruitiness will not suffer. As well, first crack is
not typically well pronounced when the relative humidity is high.

Roasted my first of two pound order of this bean--had to really crank the
heat to hit 1st two minutes later than planned--and of course then ran into
2nd and over-roasted. Description says 12-1400 meters--any ideas why this
bean resisted heat?
