That's why I don't bother any more.

The rods are slightly longer then the inside width of the roaster so that if
you gently bend the guard forward in the middle while holding the guard
towards one side, the other side can slip out.  At least that's how I
remember it.

Since it protects the quartz elements, I just leave it on now.
